Let us imagine a man who is a diesel engine mechanic by training and profession. He is browsing the shelves and shelves of a bookstore filled with books. His eyes fall upon a book entitled Encyclopedia of Diesel Engine Repair. What would be the first question that would occur to him if he were considering purchasing that book? Wouldn’t it be, “What technical knowledge and practical experience does the author bring to this subject that would make me consider purchasing his book?”
As you hold in your hands the first of several volumes of my Pastoral Theology Lectures, you may well be asking me the same question. Allow the author to answer this question in relation to his knowledge and experience in the field of pastoral theology. For forty-six years he had the privilege of fulfilling the office and responsibilities of an elder set apart to “labor in preaching and teaching” (1 Tim 5:17) within the life and ministry of Trinity Baptist Church (TBC).
